The warmer weather is here and it’s a great time to get active. Exercise is a very important factor in contributing to your overall health and wellbeing. Along with a huge range of physical benefits, exercise also acts as a ‘stress release’, increases your resistance to disease and helps you feel good about yourself.
If you haven’t exercised in a while it’s a good idea to start easy and then build up gradually as your ability improves. Even if you want to eventually do vigorous exercise, start with a few months of light exercise first.
Listen to your body. If you can’t do an exercise comfortably, slow down, don’t ‘push through’. Ask Dr . Jim for your specific recommendations.
Discomfort or pain is a sign your body is not happy. Ignoring these signals can lead to injuries, decreased performance and can become a health risk. It also greatly reduces your likelihood of enjoying exercise in your life permanently.
Always be sure to drink lots of water before, during and after you exercise. This helps to replace what has been lost through sweating and stimulates your circulation to eliminate the waste products of exercise.
Warming up and cooling down are both very important. They help your body ease into exercise and then clear waste products like lactic acid once you have finished. This helps to reduce the risk of injury and minimize potential stiffness and soreness after exercise.
